Ah, you could say I went to Adelaide Zoo JUST to shoot these magnificant birds. With only two elderly Flamingos left in Australia, it may be my last chance to.
Yep the reflection is real, no flood filter here. This image is 'mostly' as was shot out of the camera. I used spot metering to correctly expose the Flamingo, which threw the black background.

This image was only recently reworked - but I feel this is a much stronger image and it is one of my favourites of Santan - Melbourne Zoo's resident male Sumatran Orangutan.
Orangutans can seem quite private and introverted, and while Santan has his silly moments playing with his son, he is usually his quiet, watchful self. With Orangutan portraits I try to capture this, but like with human portraiture it is never easy to capture the any individual, just brief moments that reflect the workings of their inner life.

White Cheeked Gibbon

White Cheeked Gibbons are my favourite Gibbons to photograph. While this particular girl is at Adelaide Zoo, the lovely old lady at Melbourne Zoo is an absolutely fascinating and complex animal to watch and photograph. White Cheeked Gibbons have incredibly expressive faces and the black male and pale female pairs make beautiful subjects.

Loved

On my recent trip to a few Australian Zoos I was delighted to find that the Gorilla gang at Taronga Zoo had not one, but TWO youngsters. It's been a while since my local Zoo has had any babies so the opportunity to photo some mother and baby shots was too good to be true.
It was only on the last day that I got really lucky and found myself witnessing a really special moment between mother and baby. She is not sleeping here, she truly was closing her eyes in the moment, and later on gave her baby a kiss on the head.
I knew just how I wanted to process this photo - there is no room or need for distracting backgrounds, just their relationship.

Surprise

This is a Black & White Colobus Monkey. While it's obvious I cannot resist photographing their expressive faces, what you can't see here is their amazing tails. The Colobus' tail is long, abundent and beautiful and their defining feature.
Nevertheless, the Colobus is one of my favourite monkeys to photograph as their funny little nose and face always make for an interesting shot.

Lost in the Grass

One of the two young Snow Leopard cubs recently born at Melbourne Zoo. This young cub looked incredibly tiny hidden in the long grass of her enclosure. She'd just been talking her mother and brother, but she was still young enough to notice the onlookers and sat and stared at us for a good few minutes. With such an unblnking stare, for a while you could see past the captive Snow Leopard cub and see the brave, wild little cat that she is.

Who can resist a baby Orangutan?! This is Menyaru, the youngest member of the Orangutan family at Melbourne Zoo. He is always fun to watch as he truly enjoys making anyone laugh, orangutan or human.

Dreams

A beautiful female Orangutan – I noticed how expressive her big eyes were and waited until she dropped her eyes downward to capture a moment of thought and introversion. This wasn't an easy image to get, through glass, a number of little kids in front of me, I could not make many decisions on how to capture her other than waiting for the right moment. For a long time I stared at this image in colour, it was years before I decided it worked a lot as a monochrome. It's a special image that took years to get where it is now.
